Our names and identities can shift and change as we evolve. It's a present-day representation of how we perceive ourselves at this present moment in time. The name and identity that we had at 15 years old is different than the one we may have at 25 or 50 years old. As we grow, change, and have new experiences how we identify with ourselves and our name may change as well.

Our names are our identity after all. Names are far more than just labels. They are visceral representations of who we are — words that differentiate each of us and from everyone else in the world. With many billions of people to distinguish from these days, our names are a powerful form of identity and personalization.

This theme of names invoking power is something I’ve subconsciously realized in my interactions with people: not only does using someone’s name make them more engaged in the conversation, but using their name also makes you feel more invested in that person as well.

When someone wants to make you feel special, they say your name. Using a person’s name is the doorway into their world. Your name has the power to open a connection, a connection to show each other who you are, and a connection to show each other how you we see one another.
