Researchers know some of these kind of activities corresponded with specific activation patterns within the brain.
The medial prefrontal cortex is responsible for a number of the important processes that make you, well you. This includes emotions, perspective-taking, and developing theories-of-mind. Many of those processes run in the background, or are in a “resting” or “autopilot” state. These aren’t processes you actively control, but your brain reacts to them in predictable ways and patterns that help form your personality and identity.
Researchers test brain activation within this region to work out if subjects’ brains would respond in self-representational ways when hearing their own names in reference to other names. Have you ever noticed that if you hear someone calling your name you instantly look around to find out who it is? This “cocktail party” effect might explain why our ears perk up when you hear your own personal name - first name or last name - in even a loud, crowded room.
The Results: They found that there's unique brain activation when we hear our personal name. Hearing your own name causes your brain to react as if you’re engaging in the thought patterns and behaviors that serve as part of your personality markers and core identity.
In fact, this reaction is so powerful that similar patterns were observed in patients in a very persistent vegetative state (PVS). Patients in PVS are unable to maneuver, speak, identify others, and in some cases, even open their eyes. Yet these same patients demonstrated brain activation when they heard their names!
The Impact: Our brains involuntarily react to the sound of our own name, even in a state where we can’t respond to or act on anything else. That’s pretty powerful!
