Your Family Name Remembered...
“Remember me in the family tree; my name, my days...
Then I'll ride upon the wings of time
and live an endless life.”
Remembering isn’t about living in the past. It’s about giving meaning to lives well-lived. Unlocking and discovering more about our ancestors keeps us both connected to the past and looking to the future in a new and interesting ways.
But how do we keep our family name remembered? How do we keep ancestors in our minds? With so much going on these days, in your world and your life, your mind can tend to forget the stories, memories, legacies, but through the process of creativity and sharing, you find wonderful ways to keep your family name remembered.
How Does Remembering
Your Family Name & Ancestors Bring Blessings Into Your Life?
and the family name you bare.”
Over the years, I have done research to find out and share why telling future generations about their family stories builds confidence and connection within us both as youngsters and adults. It feels like the benefits that comes from remembering is two-fold. Finding family stories takes time and energy, and once a project is completed it is something to feel so good and proud of. We feel a greater sense of belonging as well. Also, learning the amazing stories of our families can fortify us to combat hard times and feel confidence and hope for the future. You can use the knowing of what your families went through and the strength they had to have to conquer their challenges and use this as inspiration in your own life.
Remembering Your Family Name... as Children
Children are carrying your memories and stories. From a young age, they absorb and take in experiences and even subconsciously have a sense of the memories from their young lives. It is during this time that you as a parent, cousin, older brother or sister, spend time making memories with the young children as well. Your family time will make memorable moments of meaningful connection, play, quality time, and tradition.
Remembering Your Family... as a Teen
Youth sometimes struggle with self-esteem and thoughts of “you’re not enough,” every time they log onto social media. How can we counter act this? We can tell them to remember who they are. Reminding them of their past and reminding them of those who loved them, and the reasons why they are so loved, is a sure-fire way to help them to deal better with life's challenges. Knowing the challenges their ancestors encountered and overcame helps them connect with what's meaningful and important as well.
Remembering Your Family Name… As an Adult
As adults, although we don’t always like to admit it out loud, we feel a little lost at times. We wonder what our purpose is or if we are doing it right. Remembering our family helps us understand who we are and gives us purpose. Finding a link or connection to an ancestor we have something in common with gives us a greater sense of self. Seeing old photos and seeing family resemblances is only the beginning of the commonalities that link our families together.
The Wonderful Practice
of Remembering
Your Family Name
Moments with family members still alive pass by so quickly with life rolling by in the blink of an eye. Much effort and time are put into celebrating those we love, while they are alive, and it’s wonderful to spend time reminiscing and reflecting on those moments - talking about those weddings, births, graduations, holidays, and other special life events. Remembering special times with our loved ones amongst us fills our lives with more gratitude and abundance.
Talking about our memories together, brings joy, courage and inspiration into your life.
Sharing ancestor stories benefits your relationships with the living - you use these stories to bring together your family members. Time together sharing stories of your ancestors strengthens bonds. It’s a good benefit to stop busying about and spend relaxed time with loved ones.
I think for many of you who remember your ancestors through genealogy or story writing, you feel a tug of the divine as you do the remembering work. I truly believe your ancestors are close by helping you to connect and share their stories. Your loved ones watching over you keep you going and bring a sense of closeness that is hard to describe to others until experiencing it. The phrase “angels among us” comes to mind.
How do you remember a loved one who has passed away and make moments for remembering?
Many people around the world have some ways in which they remember the special people in their lives who are no longer with them. Here are several easy ways people are remembering their loved ones, ancestors, and their family name and heritage.
Anniversary Celebrations:
Anniversary celebrations are special to your family and can be done often to remember those who are sadly gone but never forgotten. On their anniversary, whether their wedding or engagement, visit their gravesite and leave a written letter there. On other anniversaries, gather friends and family around and go through old albums and videos. During this time, speak about family and friends and share stories.
Picture Displays: Many families, today and in the past, have a framed picture of their loved one in their family photos to remember someone who has passed away. Another unique idea is to create an ancestor wall with several framed pictures of your ancestors and loved ones who have passed away..
Memory Keepsake Jar:
Make a memory keepsake jar by writing short memories about the loved one on pieces of paper and then putting them in a jar to later share with the whole family.

The Way We
Remember Family
Becomes A Testimony
You’re a witness to your family members and your family name. Anne Sexton once said, “It doesn’t matter who my father was; it matters who I remember he was.” Stored in your episodic memory, remembering is the cognitive basis of testimony. It’s our personal testimony of others and how we remember them. Johannes B Mahr wrote in his article titled “Witnessing, Remembering, and Testifying: Why the Past Is Special for Human Being, “Humans seem to have a special way of cognitively representing the past: episodic memory. As opposed to other ways of representing knowledge, remembering the past in episodic memory brings with it the ability to become a witness. Episodic memory allows us to determine what of our knowledge about the past comes from our own experience and thereby what parts of the past we can give testimony about.”
Give Your Personal Testimonial As You Remember Your Family Name:
Going back to what Sexton said, we all have similar memories of family members and gatherings but we also have our own personal way we remember those we loved. Your family name remembered can bring about thoughts of nostalgia, thoughts of small details that person did or looked like. Every personal record of your family name remembered adds to the book of family name testimonials.
Those Remembered Remind Us Of Ourselves:
As we remember family, we too, remember ourselves and how we felt, how we love and lived around them. This gives us more understanding of how we are as individuals and how being around those we loved shaped us. They are the building blocks to our uniqueness, authenticity and true selves? And when you remember them for shaping you as a person, how do you want your name to be remembered for shaping others? How can your name become unforgettable and remembered always? Be authentic, be vulnerable, be generous….Always remember to be Y-O-U.
Conclusion:
To have your family name remembered, is about creating memories worth remembering everyday. Spending time with your kids, family, and friends. Every day you and your family can continue the work of remembering your family and your family name.
“From time immemorial we have been counseled to be a record-keeping people. You should continue on in this important work of recording the things you do, the things you say, the things you think,” said President Kimball. He continued, “Your story should be written now while it is fresh and while the true details are available.” Your family name and your stories will then be remembered not only in the present, but forever.
“
Memories have to be made
in order to remember them.
Make some really
good ones every day.
And always remember
there was nothing worth
sharing like the love that
let us share our name.

PIX STORIES
Sooo very personal,
I LOVE my AlphabetPIX!
My family surprised me with an extraordinary framed photo art gift for my birthday! Our family name created out of your cool architectural photo letters with a beautiful rose for the O… and then…they added a very personal photo of me holding my new sweet baby girl Emma at the end.
My alphabet photography art is a delightful, fascinating, unique, and a true conversation piece. Everyone comments on what a beautiful and personal gift it is. But have to say, what I love most is that my family actually all came together to create this super personal photo alphabet artwork for me, really taking time and care to think about each photo letter they selected and what I would like most. And adding my own photo at the end of the word made my artwork so very very personal and special to me.
I have got to admit, it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. My family name art so personally created from my family puts a smile on my face every time I see it. It brings me such joy, and makes me feel so special!
I just LOVE IT!!!
Thank you AlphabetPIX!
