• Not too way back, I had a conversation with someone about expressing themselves in their home decor. She mentioned that she had a selected accessory that she absolutely loved – a piece that complimented her glamorous style. However, she was afraid to display it in her home, because some others thought it was too “fancy”.
• One of our readers responding to a survey said that they had an interior decorator come to their home and her recommendations were all about what was “fashionable”, not what suited their style.
• Another one of our readers said that the kind of style they wanted for their home decor didn’t look like the homes on popular Instagram feeds or decorating shows. They believed that their design sense must be “wrong”, that instead they should copy these other homes all the way down to the last accessory.
Do any of those situations sound like something you’re experiencing? If so, you’re not alone. We hear these sorts of stories from people all the time. We're here to tell you, please, it’s not about following trends, strictly adhering to style rules (remember: there are no rules, only guidelines), or pleasing everyone else on this planet.
It’s about being faithful to yourself and embracing your personal design style. It’s your home and you ought to be free to decide your own home decor style, whatever it will be. If you like plenty of color, fill your home with the colors you like. If you prefer all-white, stick with a palette of white that matches your tastes.

What inspires you?
Try these visual explorations for inspiration...
Pinterest is probably one of the foremost popular sources of inspiration for your home decor and design style. We've saved thousands of pins and add new pins daily. Take a glance around.
Browse magazines
Pinterest is great, but there's such a lot of beautiful images at once, it can feel difficult to zero in on a direction you're most drawn to. Perhaps instead, flip through magazine pages one by one and tear out the photos of rooms and houses that you are most drawn to. Scrutinize magazines and cut out pictures of room designs, furniture, accessories, artwork, colors, objects, textures, paint effects or anything you find appealing to your senses. There's no right or wrong – just tear out what you love! Then study what you tear out and identify what the images have in common.
Browse design, art, travel
Look through interior design, art and travel books, too. If you can’t cut out the images, take a snapshot of them. Don’t limit yourself to simply interior design – that ad may have a color combination that takes your breath away. Get out those scissors and add it to your image gallery.
Pay attention to life around you
When you're out and about, take pictures of things that catch your eye or that you just find visually appealing. It might be a basket of untamed flowers, a menu from your favorite restaurant, or the way the beach looks at sunset. Keep your eyes open to inspiration all around you.

What says "you"?
Understand your lifestyle and what your home means to you. When you walk into your home, what vibe would you like to feel? Do you like bright bold colors or a more subdued feel. What level of activity is going to be happening in each area – social entertaining or a quiet escape.
Only you recognize what floats your boat. Stay faithful to yourself. Be creative, explore colors, textures and do research. Take the time, go online, and take a looks at different styles. Saved images of furnishings you wish for. This all helps guide your direction.

Look in your wardrobe
Take an honest, hard examination of your favorite clothing items. Pay attention to the colors and textures. Are they mostly neutral? If so, you will likely prefer a neutral color palette for your home. Are your favorite clothes alive with multiple colors and bold patterns? If so, selecting the same look when choosing textiles for your home will probably work well with your style.

Your home is your canvas
What will work well within the architectural layout of your house? Understand these parameters so you'll be able to design best for every space. Do you have vaulted ceilings, exposed piping, bay windows, curved entryways, or unique moldings? These elements are often creatively showcased or minimized. What's your preference?

Take stock of your current decor
Walk through your house and take notes. In each room, make a listing of furniture/art/accessories you fancy most, and create a separate list for the things you want to replace. Then, review the list of the things you love and what they have in common. Write those down. Keep that list with you each time you create or purchase things for your home. It will function as an excellent guide to keep your personal style on track for your home.
Identifying your home aesthetic shouldn’t limit your choices or creativity. Your style inspires your design choices. Mix and match pieces from different design categories and you've created a style that's all of your own.
